Known for quality legal advice and guidance, our San Antonio law firm also assists clients at hearings and before the federal court in broad range immigration cases involving visas, citizenship, naturalization, political asylum and deportation.

Divorce is a legal action that follows state rules and severs a couple’s marital ties and legal obligations to one another and their children.

Dissolution of Marriage in Texas

If you live in Texas and wish to file for divorce, you must be a resident of the state for six months and a county resident for 90 days. Either party can obtain a divorce on a no-fault basis by stating that there are “irreconcilable differences” between the parties. And as long as both parties are in agreement regarding the divorce, they can stipulate in writing that the marriage be terminated. Couples who have been married for a short time, do not have children or significant amount of assets or debts and agree to end their marriage can do so without undue stress or expense.

On the other hand, a contested divorce, one in which the parties dispute issues such as custody of children, visitation, child support and spousal maintenance and division of assets and debts, can result in emotional turmoil for the entire family and a potentially long and costly legal battle.
